President’s Note

Respected seniors and dear friends,

On behalf of the Pediatric Rheumatology Society I take this opportunity to welcome you all to the 16th National Conference of Pediatric Rheumatology.

At the outset I must congratulate Dr Vijay Viswanathan for shouldering the near impossible task of organising the national conference at a very short notice. However, Atlas shrugged and true to his namesake, ‘the Victor’ has carried out the task with great aplomb.

Pediatric Rheumatology has traditionally been considered a niche subspeciality. However, with increasing incidence of immunologic diseases with their varying and often protean presentations, acquiring knowledge about the whims of the immune system is becoming important for general paediatricians to intensivists alike. With the discovery of MAS/ HLH, the thin line separating infections and immune activation is also getting blurred. Really, we have come a long way from the days of Rheumatic Fever.

‘Swa deshe poojyathe Raja, Vidhyan sarvathra poojyathe’- In his own kingdom the king is respected, a Learned man receives universal adoration.

Let us hope this conference impart undiluted knowledge so that we emerge a little more wise in patient care and improve their overall quality of life.

Dr Priyankar Pal
Prof. of Pediatrics and HOD Pediatric Rheumatology,
Institute of Child Health, Kolkata.
President, Pediatric Rheumatology Society of India.
